With a better understanding of your body comes a new perspective of your asana practice. No one else can feel and hence adjust yourself better in a yoga-pose than you! Learn how muscles, bones and fascia restrict/enhance movement and shift your practice to a whole new level. David presents anatomy in an easy and fun way – always related to the yoga practice and loaded with practical exercises so you can feel and experience it for yourself.
The information in this workshop is always presented in a simple and straightforward manner. This workshop gives participants an opportunity to understand concepts and principles that apply directly to the practice and teaching of yoga.
It begins with a fundamental shift in how the body is constructed and how it is discussed in Western scientific terms. In other words, we all believe the story of western science. It’s not a false story, but it’s just a piece of the story and therefore limiting if it is the only story we listen to. The story told in this workshop is about integration and function. Using the western model, we can explore the parts and pieces. Using yoga, we see how these parts and pieces fit and function together as an integrate whole.
I’m delighted to study with David Keil again. I read his brilliant anatomy book before I attended his weekend workshop in 2016. He’s even better in person than on the page, maybe because I’m a visual learner, and maybe because he’s so good at answering questions. In addition to clearly demonstrating anatomy, he gave great tips for how to practice Ashtanga vinyasa. One thing I learned from him was how to roll over the feet. Now it comes to me easily — I had practice for a really long time and not figured that out. I can’t wait for his upcoming workshop. ~Amanda Rubenstein-Stern

– Introduction to the overall dynamics and systems of the body: fascial network, muscular principles and functions, skeletal system and how it all applies to yoga.

Exploring the Leg 8:30-12pm
– The foot/ankle relationship to posture.
– The knee, one of the most complicated joints and why it’s so prone to injury.
– The hips as a powerful mover of the legs, a platform for the torso and why they’re so tight!
Spine and Psoas 2-5:30pm
– The pelvis as the foundation for seated postures
– The spine: understand how and why it functions and dysfunctions the way it does!
– The psoas-muscle: the single most important postural and structural muscle in our body.
Sunday January 15th 8:30-11:30am
Breath and Arms
– Breathing is a primary act of life. It links everything together in the practice and is our gateway to the subtle components of the practice!

David Keil was introduced to yoga in 1989 by his Tai Chi Chuan teacher. Both the Tai Chi and Yoga practice at the ripe age of 17 began his research into his own mind-body connections. His search continued through massage therapy where he discovered many insights and affirmations of what he had been exploring and finding on his own through his practices. One of the most important elements was the specific understanding of the musculoskeletal system and how fascinating, beautiful, and amazing the body is on the scientific level and how that directly played into and off of his own understanding of the human body. He was given names and explanations for some of things he had been experiencing and feeling.
As an instructor of Kinesiology (the study of movement and musculoskelatal anatomy) at Miami’s Educating Hands School of Massage from 1999-2003, David developed a fun, informal and informative style of teaching. By repeatedly teaching incoming students who had no prior understanding of anatomy, David was confronted with the problem of making such a complex and beautiful system accessible and understandable to the average person.
David brings his unique style and ability to make things simple to the yoga world. Because of his passion and desire to share the human body with everyone, he delivers this complex and sometimes frustrating topic in a way that is very accessible and understandable to yoga practitioners.
David recently published a comprehensive manual Functional Anatomy of Yoga, the most accessible book about anatomy on the market today.
