Yoga

Yoga is an Indian philosophy.  In India, philosophies aim to bring about change in human beings through a quest for a higher truth that transcends the physical world.

Hatha yoga class at Balance in Mid CityHatha yoga involves a set of physical practices including  asana (yoga postures), kriyas (cleanses), and pranayama (breathing exerercises) to purify the body, which activates a dormant nerve (called kundalini) at the base of the spine and gives the practitioner experiences of higher consciousness and balance in daily life.

There are many paths to the same goal, and at Balance we recognize this and offer classes in several different yoga styles that fall within this ancient tradition.  Click here to read our class descriptions and learn more about each style. We also have a variety of classes that cater to beginners.  Learn more about Beginners’ Series here.

While we encourage students to explore in order to find the right style and teacher, it is through consistent practice in one style that the fruits of yoga truly ripen.  This is analogous to the search for water when digging a well – one may dig many shallow holes and never find water.  It is necessary to dig deeply to find the water.  Approaching yoga by studying and practicing profoundly within a tradition is a clear way to find the truth within the self.
