What’s In A Name?

Diverse students practicing yoga

As yoga evolves, the difference between “styles” has lessened. Teachers learn from different schools of yoga and teachers. This is healthy and creates a richer yoga experience.

Our instructors don’t fit the mold of one style or another. They are diverse. Common threads are woven between our classes -- living yoga's philosophy, mindfulness, attention to safe alignment. And styles change over time as we do.

For example, I hadn’t been to one of Tracey’s classes in years. Sunday I attended her 10am Sliding Scale class. Tracey’s teaching was completely different, and in a really awesome way.

How would I define the class?
We flowed, though it wasn’t vinyasa.
We sat mindfully and we tuned into our breath and body. Thought it wasn’t pure meditation.
We also alignment, though it wasn't Iyengar or Anusara.

Tracey and her approach to yoga doesn't fit into a specific style. Most of our teachers feel this way. Rather than use names which don't apply, we're unifying our class names.

Introducing Balance Yoga Classes

A unique student-centered approach, taught at an open level. Balance classes include breath awareness, alignment and flow. The primary traditions our teachers study and borrow from are Ashtanga, Iyengar, Anusara, Vinyasa, Hatha, and Kaivalyadham Yoga.

We believe that interweaving from a diverse pool of influences creates a stronger yoga offering for physical, emotional and cultural well being. Teachers are encouraged to develop their individual styles and to share their unique experiences and tricks with you. Every class at Balance is unique. Balance Yoga is always evolving as we do and varies from teacher to teacher. Unless noted, classes are appropriate for all levels of practitioners.

Can a new student attend an all levels class?

Don’t worry about being new! There’s no judgement at Balance Yoga, and we’re all here to support one another. You can set yourself up in the middle of the room so you can see those in front and behind you. Introduce yourself to the teacher and let them know that you’re new if you like.

How Will Our Current Classes Change?

The content of our classes will be the same!

Here are some examples of changes:
Balance Yoga + Yin = Includes Yin
Balance Yoga + Restore  = Includes Restorative
Balance Yoga Plus = Advanced Classes, Align & Refine L2/3
Balance Basics = for raw beginners, those working with injuries
Balance Yoga Sliding Scale = formerly community classes
Ashtanga, Fat Kids Yoga Club and Kundalini will remain the same.

We hope you’ll continue to love yoga as we do. The name changes will be rolled out in phases over the next two weeks. The new name reflects the coherence across our classes while respecting our teachers as individuals.
